Edna comes to eat late like always and once she sits down she receives the devastating news that Robert is going to Mexico. She had spent the morning with Robert and now she feels betrayed and hurt that he is leaving. He didn’t even think of telling her when they were alone. He leaves that same day at 10, and says it has always been his dream. The different conversations break up about Mexicans and Mexico. Victor is very talkative and him and his mother argue about it. The young couple have a quite and private conversation about who knows what.
Edna eats and once she is done she leaves to go and attend her children and duties. Her sons are very active and don’t want to go to bed. She dismisses the quadroon and takes care of them herself. The story she tells them only gives them more energy and a black girl comes and tells her Mdm. Lebrun wishes to talk to her before Robert leaves. She stays and when confronted by Mdm. R she lets her feelings out. Mdm. R goes to Mdm. Lebrun saying Edna wasn’t feeling well hence why she didn’t go.
Robert comes to talk to her while she is sitting in the dark. Now that they are alone she lets her feelings towards his departure known. Their conversation quickly ends, but they do agree to write to each other once Robert gets to Vera Cruz. The conversation quickly ends the 20 minutes they have are only seconds. The last words being “I will, thank you; good-by “(Chopin, pg. 75). Robert departs on this trip that doesn’t have an end date and Edna is left devastated and heartbroken.”The present …to torture her ..with the biting which her impassioned, newly awakened being demanded.”(Chopin, pg. 76)
