Edna and her family are back in at their “charming home on Esplanade Street in New Orleans” (Chopin, pg.83 ). The household Goods are the main thing Mr. Pontellier loves the most. To him, everything in his home has a place and just shows how great he is. This becomes one of the topics of discussion between him and Edna. The other being the fact that she doesn’t go about her normal Tuesday reception. This to Mr. Pontellier is not good and very childish of Edna. When she says that there was no excuse left he has a fuss. His wife is to have conversations with the visitors and please them so his business connections prosper.
Edna not following his commands and expectations greatly displeases him, so he leaves dinner saying it was unpleasing and she should be more demanding to the maid. Edna stays and finishes alone unlike before. Mr. Pontellier goes out to eat and drink, and “her face was flushed and her eyes flamed with some inward fire that lightened them”(Chopin, pg. 87).Later at night when “the voices” are talking she lets out all her anger. First, she removes her wedding ring and stomps upon it then”seized a glass vase from the table and flung it upon the tiles of the hearth” (Chopin,pg.87). When the maid comes to see what has happened she tells her not to worry, leave it and that it will be taken care of in the morning as well as returning her ring to its place.
