The chapter starts with Alcée Arobin sending an apology letter to Edna. She thinks about her response and what she wants it to be to him. “If she ignored his note it would give undue importance to a trivial affair. If replied to serious spirit …leave ..the impression that she in a susceptible moment yielded to his influence.”(Chopin, pg. 130) Edna relies with a “light and bantering a spirit “(Chopin, pg. 130) in which she and Alcée starts this new relationship with supplementary meaning. He becomes the replacement in a way for Robert , as well as stirring unfaithful actions between them both.
All takes a turn when Edna goes to visit Mademoiselle Reisz. She appears with moisture and soon starts to dry with the warmth provided in Mademoiselle’s home. The converse about Edna’s new found desire to move out to a four bedroom home but most importantly become her own owner. Mademoiselle questions Edna about her reasoning, to quick she’s respond with the fact that the house is too big. Edna has her own money on which she wants to live and be independent. The new letter from Robert informs her that “very soon ” he’ll be back. Edna is devastated that he is coming back, she’s unsure of what to do. even though she is facing a new obstacle she is filled with so much joy.Edna goes home and writes a letter to her husband. “Her letter was brimming with cheerfulness.”(Chopin, pg. 136)
